Dolphin Sutures - Range Overview

Dolphin Sutures - Range Overview

Ostralos has teamed up with specialist suture manufacturer Dolphin Sutures to produce an outstanding range of surgical sutures. These sutures are made specifically for Ostralos, utilising top-of-the-line "Prime" needles, matched with a superb range of quality natural and synthetic materials.

Progut Plain (Catgut Plain)

Progut Plain is a natural, absorbable, monofilament suture, composed of purified collagen from the intestinal submucosa of sheep and goat.

Progut Plain provides:

  • Excellent tensile and needle attachment strength
  • Wound support for 12-15 days and usually resorbed by 45 days, causing minimal tissue reaction
  • Polished finish for smooth and reliable knot security
  • Popular suture choice for general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation

Progut Chromic (Catgut Chromic)

Progut Chromic is a natural, absorbable, monofilament suture, composed of purified collagen from the intestinal submucosa of sheep and goat.

Progut Chromic sutures are treated with chromic salt to resist enzymatic hydrolysis of the suture and enhance the absorption period.

Progut Chromic provides:

  • Longer wound support with tensile strength being lost at 18-21 days
  • Minimal adverse tissue reaction due to treatment with chromic salt
  • Use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures.
  • Available in dark brown colour for easy identification during surgery
  • A range of thread sizes (3-0 to 5-0) and needle shape and sizes, including 19mm RC 3/8C for general soft tissue approximation and 17mm RB 1/2C for subcutaneous procedures

Petcryl 910 Fast (Polyglactin 910)

Petcryl 910 Fast is a braided and coated absorbable synthetic suture composed of Glycolide and Lactide.

Petcryl 910 Fast provides:

  • Lower molecular weight compared to Polyglactin 910 or Polyglycolic Acid sutures for rapid absorption through simple hydrolytic mechanisms
  • 5-10 days wound support, ideal for superficial soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including ophthalmic procedures
  • Smooth suture, easy to pass through tissue and good knot security due to coating of lactide and glactide copolymer, and calcium stearate
  • Available in undyed colour for concealed wound closure
  • A range of thread sizes (3-0 to 6-0) and needle shape and sizes, including 19mm RC 3/8C for general soft tissue approximation and 17mm RB 1/2C for subcutaneous procedures

Petcryl Mono (Poliglecaprone 25)

Petcryl Mono is a monofilament, synthetic, absorbable suture composed of a co-polymer of Glycolide and Caprolactone.

Petcryl Mono provides:

  • Smoother passage through tissues due to monofilament nature
  • High initial tensile strength with wound support lasting 7-14 days
  • Available in violet colour for visibility when suturing
  • Allows wounds to be kept exceptionally clean, without build-up of plaque and bacteria and is an ideal suture for implant surgery, soft-tissue approximation, subcuticular dermis closure of the face and ligation

Sutura (Silk)

Sutura sutures are coated and braided non-absorbable sutures composed of entwined thread from silkworm larva.

Sutura provides:

  • Thread specially treated with silicon to enhance the strength of the suture and allow smooth passage through the tissue
  • Minimal initial inflammatory response in tissues, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue
  • Non-absorbable suture, not subject to degradation or weakening by the action of tissue enzymes
  • Available in black colour for easy identification during surgery
  • Widely used suture for ligature and also used for soft-tissue approximation, ophthalmic procedures and GI tract procedures

Linex (Mono Nylon)

Linex is a non-absorbable, monofilament, polyamide suture that possesses remarkable tensile strength and a smooth finish.

Linex provides:

  • Smooth and soft texture, with excellent tensile strength, allowing easy passage through tissue and excellent knot security
  • Infection resistant for safe placement and removal of sutures
  • High degree of elasticity for greater strength in fine sizes, allowing for a wide range of use for the closure of subcuticular layers.
  • Available in black colour for easy identification during surgery
  • A range of thread sizes (4-0 to 6-0) and needle shape and sizes, including 19mm RC 3/8C and 12mm RC 3/8C

Duracare (Polypropylene)

Duracare are non-absorbable, monofilament sutures, composed of an isotactic crystalline stereoisomer of polypropylene.

Duracare provide:

  • Permanent wound support
  • Blue coloured suture for easy identification during surgery
  • Elicit minimal tissue reaction and do not cause tissue rupture or support infection
  • Excellent tensile strength and exhibit no elongation during knotting, ideal for knot security
  • Ideal for general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures
  • Available in 5-0 thread and 16mm RC 3/8C needle
